Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT)

Inference-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT)  has been around since the 1990s and is becoming increasingly utilized among OCD specialists. Where other OCD treatment approaches focus on tolerating and accepting the unwanted thoughts, I-CBT shifts that focus to understanding and correcting the faulty reasoning that generates those thoughts to begin with.

This faulty reasoning process is called inferential confusion. Inferential confusion is specific to those who struggle with OCD. It's when your brain mistakes an imagined possibility for a real threat that requires action—even though there's no direct evidence in your present reality to support it.

Your perception isn't flawed

Your imagination is just out of focus

By targeting that faulty reasoning process, you’re getting to the heart of OCD. This empowers you to recognize your doubts as irrelevant and helps restore confidence in your own perceptions and judgment — but most importantly, it allows you to reconnect with and trust the person you know yourself to be.

Stop believing the story

Start questioning the logic behind it

OCD is often called the 'doubting disease' because of the convincing narratives it creates — stories shaped by personal meaning, vivid imagination, and emotionally charged reasoning.

So rather than learning to adapt and accept the presence of those stories, I-CBT can help you identify and eliminate the reasoning errors that create and sustain them in the first place.

You don’t have to face your fears

When you can see there was nothing to fear to begin with

If the idea of exposure therapy feels too overwhelming or scary for you, that’s okay! There is another research-backed treatment to try. Because I-CBT works to resolve obsessional doubts at their source, as a result the anxiety naturally fades making exposures unnecessary. You do not need to confront fears when you are able to recognize the doubt is false from the start. Instead of pushing through fear, you’re learning to dismantle it at its root.
